One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London

2.0

I really wanted to love this book. The Bachelor is a love-to-hate watch. UnReal was dark and twisty fun. So the idea of a Bachelor-like franchise featuring a plus-size lead seemed sure to please. Unfortunately, the premise didn't pay off for me. I would have loved to see a lead who was confident in herself, or at least one who more clearly grew into her confidence. Instead, we are told that she's happy and confident at the end. I needed to see more of that journey. Perhaps worse, I didn't believe the romance. We don't get to spend enough time with the men to build empathy and understanding, so when they act poorly, I had no sympathy (to be fair that's true of the show that inspired the book too). The things I did enjoy were the description of the fashion and the inclusivity that the book promotes.
