A Burning by Megha Majumdar
3.0

This book left me feeling desolate.

The unforgettable storyline is unlike anything I have read before, and it will undoubtedly stay with me. The theme of this book (do you do what is right or what is easy?) is timely and powerful.

The plot and pacing is definitely a 4+ for me, and there were some slices that are so beautifully written. However, while I cared what happened to each of them, I had a hard time connecting and relating to the characters. Lovely is so charming (for most of this story), and would be the closest to an exception.

Ultimately, this book was just full of such horrible interactions and behaviors, and it just left me feeling depleted. I wanted redemption and when it was clear that wasn’t going to happen, I just wanted the story to end.

My gut instinct was to give this 3 star rating, but I don’t think I can give a book a 3 star review when it made me feel such (albeit negative) reaction, so I am rounding up to 4.

Update 8/5 - Bumping down to a 3 star review because while I still think of this memorable book, my thoughts aren’t positive.
