The Lottery Ticket by Anton Chekhov
4.0

Had to try another story on classicshorts.com and I figured this short one by [a:Anton Chekhov|5031025|Anton Chekhov|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1317162641p2/5031025.jpg] could be interesting.

The story starts with a husband checking the newspaper to see if the lottery ticket his wife bought is a winner. The first half of the number matches the $75,000 winner. The two begin to imagine what they would do with the money. The story is fewer than 2000 words so I can't summarize it much more without spoiling the whole thing.

It's a fascinating look into the human mind. I enjoyed how many different emotions there were in such a short story. Although I did expect a slightly darker ending than the one presented. I'm giving it only 4* because I really wished it had gone more the way I was predicting. Which is a weird way to "punish" this story—me thinking I could have written a better ending than Chekhov!
