This was a bold and brave essay collection, discussing difficult but important topics and subjects that aren't usually spoken about so openly. There were some essays that I was really captivated by, for example, I found it really interesting to read about the different ways Janet Jackson's album 'Control' had influenced both the author and her mother.
However, there were also sections of the book that I didn't like. One that particularly stuck out to me was an essay discussing how the woman that a man is cheating with is often treated as more of a villain than the man having the affair - with reference to songs like Jolene, for example. I initially liked the acknowledgment of this attitude within pop culture but, as the essay developed, it seemed to become a way of eliminating the guilt of knowingly sleeping with a married man and some condemnation was actually placed on the woman being cheated on instead.
I'm still quite conflicted on this collection overall.
