Lost in Time by A.G. Riddle
5.0

This book was one hell of a ride. A twisty time-distorting novel where my understanding of whatever was going on was only ever temporary, if I understood it at all.

It centres around a group of scientists who invent a technology which can transport the worst criminals back in time, all the way back to the time of the dinosaurs, an ironic freedom compared to prison or the death sentence given that they end up the special meal.

Everything is going well until one of the scientists is found guilty of the murder of another one of the scientists. Then it becomes race, both against and across, time itself, to find out if he was framed, the reason why, and if it can be undone using the same machine; travelling to the past without affecting causality and destroying the entire universe.

It also features some of the gutsiest foreshadowing I’ve ever seen. There are so many points at which the main character wondered why she never thought of that, and I found myself wondering that too, but I was so engrossed in the adventure with her that I just went along with whatever she did and thought. All the while the author knew that he was sailing dangerously close to the wind with potential reveals, but had the confidence that I wouldn’t ask the obvious questions. A superlative piece of writing!
