Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer
4.0
Look. It's 4 stars because of ✨vibes✨ and I ain't ashamed to admit it.
Is this the greatest book you will ever read? Nah. Is it so memorable you'll think of it for years to come? Probably not. Is it the best writing you've seen in a while? Not really.
But it's a refreshing take on a popular trope with some nice twists.
You have the grumpy vs sunshine dynamic throughout the whole book, but Eevie isn't one-dimensional and just *happy* all the time for the sake of the trope and The Villain is not forever grumpy *just because*. There is a rather tragic backstory and choices made that led them to where they are.
I also rather enjoyed the twist in Evangelina's character development at the end of the book. IYKYK.
The book doesn't pretend to be anything more than it is, there is no pomposity, it's simply a light read set in a forgettable fantasy world with some pleasant (or not so much) characters.
If this sounds like something you'd like to read, then, by all means, go for it.
Just don't expect more from the book that it is and wants to be.
