sariahsharp 's review for:
Vanity Fair
by William Makepeace Thackeray
I can appreciate the writing and wit of a story while completely despising every character and really kind of hating the whole book because of the characters, right? Because that's just what happened here. I love that this was written as a serial, so nothing is too drawn out. I love the little witty bits, and I loved the clear, descriptive writing. The author's introduction is one of the best things ever. But the characters? Becky Sharp is a plotting, conniving, classic Mean Girl. Amelia is a weak, simpering, clueless (but a little bit adorable) follower. The men are all weak willed, snobbish, and annoying. And yet... I had to know what happened next! I felt confused in my hatred/enjoyment.
