Becoming Jinn
by Lori Goldstein
4 Stars maybe rounded to 4.5
A Chisel, A Hammer, A Wrench. A Sander, A Drill, A Power Saw. A Laser, a heat gun, a flaming torch. Nothing cuts through the bangle. Nothing I conjure even makes a scratch.
This opening sentence piqued my curiosity like crazy. I read it and I was like : Okay, Okay. What is that?
Despite the fact that most of the reviews I read for this book were bad ones, I purchased it nonetheless because the synopsis was very intriguing. I mean come on people, how many times do we read YA/fantasy books with a JINN protagonist. I say zero for me.
Lori Goldstein debut novel revolves around the world of Jinn and I absolutely loved how she built that world withing the 21st century. I mean, when you hear the word Jinn or even Genie you automatically think of the old ages and Aladdin. But it was nothing cheesy like that. It was so captivating, original and intriguing. I couldn't help but want to know more about the world, the Zar sisters, the Afrits and Janna. The characters were all on point and there's definitely romance in disguise of friendship. A hint of a love triangle but the kind you enjoy reading about.
I certainly cannot wait for the second and last book because I sure want MORE.
