Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh

4.5

This was a fun reread! There’s so much I forgot since AP Lit.

I can’t believe how unaware I was of the relationship between Charles and Sebastian when I first read it. And now reading it again, I’m shocked by how completely Sebastian disappears from the book about halfway through or so. The pace definitely hit a bit of a slump in the middle, but it picked back up because of what an interesting character Julia was.

The look at family and religion here was so true and fascinating. The staying power of being raised with faith, the cultural impact of a Catholic upbringing, sacramental moments at the end of someone’s life… these themes will definitely stay with me.

Hopeful that Steve will read this one so I can have a conversation buddy!
