Barely Functional Adult: It’ll All Make Sense Eventually is a collection of experiences, thoughts, and moments from the life of Meichi Ng, the creator of the Barely Functional Adult webcomic on Instagram. Full of thought-provoking questions such as, "Why are fish sometimes not the ideal pet?", "What is the right way to approach therapy?", and "Why do I suddenly sound like an 'old person'?", Barely Functional Adult intersperses its stories with accompanying comics that illustrate the moment with humor, ennui, hope, and pathos. These are the thoughts and feelings that are often experienced, but rarely shared, as Meichi unveils the struggles that often accompany growing into barely functional adulthood.

I was surprised at how accessible and enjoyable Barely Functional Adult turned out to be! Chronicling many relatable experiences that 20-somethings and early-30-somethings deal with in their own lives, Meichi puts it out there for us to commiserate with, even if it's ugly or inappropriate for the moment. The comics in particular are brilliant and funny! There were many that I laughed heartily at, and others I nodded at in somber agreement. What I really liked about this title is that it's not absolutely necessary to read it front-to-back in order. Each chapter illuminates a different topic or story, and so if you find you're dealing with a specific moment in your own life, it's easy to flip to that section and receive some illustrated commiseration.

Even when I finished reading Barely Functional Adult, I found myself flipping the pages randomly just so I could relish the comics again. Meichi Ng has crafted a charming, witty, laugh-out-loud deconstruction of that awkward period between, "I'm an adult now?" and "I'm going to spend my evening researching vacuums!" I recommend this for every person who's ever felt like they didn't quite have it all put together, because most of us can probably say we qualify as a Barely Functional Adult, and Meichi Ng reassures us that It'll All Make Sense Eventually.
