Doctor Sleep by Stephen King
3.0

It was good. But not great.

I liked how King imagined Dan all grown up, still haunted by ghosts from his past and tormented by a drinking problem. And still full of shine. The way he wove a powerful young student into the tapestry was well-done.

However, it felt like King had two ideas and he tried to fit them together, not entirely seamlessly.

And there were some things that felt entirely unnecessary. In fact, I think the movie got it right in omitting certain family connections.

This also feels, at times, remarkably similar to other works from King. Think "Firestarter." Not necessarily a bad thing. But at times it feels like King is working off a template.

And King has a tendency to write adults all the same. Again, as if from a template. Adult characters in his stories (Dan excluded) feel very one-dimensional, created merely to provide some dialogue and drive the plot along. But drive they do.

Solidly middle ground for King. It's not off the rails like "It," or classic like "Carrie" or "Misery." And it could never live up to "The Shining." But it didn't have to in order to keep the constant reader reading.
