The Mayor of Casterbridge by Thomas Hardy
4.0

FIRST LINE REVIEW: "One evening of late summer, before the nineteenth century had reached one-third of its span, a young man and woman, the latter carrying a child, were approaching the large village of Weydon-Priors, in Upper Wessex, on foot." They are walking toward a moment in all three of their lives that will completely transform each of them...and not for the better. I found this early Hardy novel to be so much more engaging than "Jude the Obscure." I cared more about the characters even as I regretted the tragic flaws that lead some of them to classic ends.
