I find Chambers' approach so unique it is exciting. Here, she takes characters, 1 of whom is related to a character from the first book, who are connected via their living aboard the Fleet that left Earth. Each character is clearly defined and expressed through the presentation of their lives. 
Each one gets their own chapters and gradually their connections, if there are some, are revealed.
Intriguing and warm.
