Rolling in the Deep by Mira Grant
2.0

Wow, this book was just silly. First, I have to tell you I kind of enjoyed it, but in the same way that I enjoy a bad Syfy channel movie like Aquarium of the Dead. I was actually texting quotes from the book to my husband so we could laugh at them.

Some of the quotes:
*"What the f*ck just happened? That mermaid just tore his f*cking face off!"

*"She was no longer screaming because she no longer has a face to scream with."

*"It ate [his] face right off of his head!"

As you can see, most of the action involves face-eating. The problem is that 1) the action doesn't start until the last quarter of the book and 2) it is all telling, no showing. We are told that people are killed, but it's not described and we're often even told after the fact. It's not that I was looking for body horror in this, but I need something to make the action suspenseful, creepy, or interesting instead of ridiculous.

The mermaids have no lore, the characters have very little depth, other than a couple of manic pixie girl mermaids and one deaf character (his deafness seems to define him though, so I'm not sure how much of that should be considered depth). I get that this is supposed to be read before Into the Drowning Deep, but it didn't make me want to read more, it makes me glad I didn't waste my time on that one.

I would recommend this book in two situations:
1. You want to read literally everything that has killer mermaids in it no matter the quality.
2. You have are in the mood for the book version of a bad Syfy movie and want to do a buddy read where you laugh at the silly parts.
