The One and Only Ivan
by Katherine Applegate
As I push for my 100 book goal I remind myself that it's important to read some things outside of my comfort zone. I draw the line at romance, nothing personal to those that favor that genre, it's just not my cup of tea. Novels for children and young adults, picture books, kids books on science and history are all fair game. Heck I might even read a James Patterson, maybe.
The One and Only Ivan is an award selection that would work for kids starting around 3rd or 4th grade. Ivan is a great ape whoas been imprisoned by other apes for around 9,000 days. This doesn't really bother him until he makes a deathbed promise to the elephant in the next cell. Ivan then uses his skills as an artist to attract the attention of the local zoo, a place he deems to be a much more appropriate home. And no, he doesn't use feces for paint, although he does occasionally hurl "me-balls" at visitors.
The whole point of the book seems to be that 1) gorillas and elephants understand more than we think they do so we'd best watch what we say around them and 2) people come in varying combinations of good and bad. Sometimes they hurt you, but sometimes they help too.
