I usually can’t stand YA anymore, but the way this was told was, for the most part, brilliant PLUS the story was engaging. I’m pleased Tori’s short story in the Dark Academia anthology led me to her backlist. I can’t wait to get into more.
One of the main reasons this couldn’t get 4 stars was because the hardships that Tess was purportedly facing were not even in the ballpark of what Elliot was going through, but somehow we had to pretend like these were equally engaging tragic backstories. Like Tess took it upon herself to parent her sister, for… reasons? Even though her reportedly “childish” parents kind of came across as being nothing of the sort? I really can’t take YA 100% seriously anymore because these are not the problems a 16 year old is facing, I’m sorry.
