Katherine by Anya Seton

4.0

Anya Seton is a master of the historical novel. She includes almost enough accurate details to make Alison Weir proud and she writes more compellingly than Philipa Gregory. Truly a lovely combination. "Katherine" tells the story of Katherine Swynford, paramour and third wife of John of Gaunt. This medieval period of England (after Richard the Lion-hearted but before the War of the Roses) was largely unknown to me, yet despite that I read the book easily enough. Seton's skill as a writer makes glossaries, family trees, and time lines unnecessary. Overall very nicely done.
