I was very lucky to be invited on the Emery Rose ARC team! I am a huge fan of Emery's writing. She writes with such emotion, that there isn't a character I can't like. She makes sure she writes their social side, as well as their raw side. And this continued into When Wrecked Meets Ruined.
This is book #4 in the Lost Stars series. I do recommend reading this series in order however this can be read as a standalone, but to feel the real emotional impact of all characters - At least read When the Storm Breaks (book #2) beforehand.
Ridge is the enigma. He turned up on his older brother's porch at 17, lost & confused, with no where else to go. With the death of his mum from an overdose & a father not around, his older brother is the only person he could turn too or be homeless. Brody, his older brother, took him in straight away. With Brody owning a horse ranch in Texas, & Ridge growing up in Chicago, it did take him some time to find his bearings. But with the support of his brother, support he has never had before, he found himself. And in doing so, found Evie too.
Evie grew up with a mother who cared about her next fix, than her children. With a new 2 year old sister, Evie went from trying to graduate high school, to being a single mum to her younger sister. She works at the local diner to make her own money & save / have money for her toddler sister, and only depends on one person, her best friend; Quinn. She knows Ridge is a football player, & a bit of a playboy, and chooses she doesn't want anything to do with him. But as life keeps bringing them to hang, they become friends that quickly move into a Summer fling before they go off to college. Only with them both having a lot more in common then once thought, they find themselves falling in love for the first time. With Ridge set to go to college a couple of hours away, & Evie wanting to stay back to be close to her younger sister, can they make it work outside the Summer fling?
This book is written in 3 parts. First part is them in high school & getting together at the end of their senior year & finding themselves in each other over the Summer. Second part is college life. Third part is their official ending. Will they get the happy ending?
There is a traumatic scene which I shall include the trigger warnings for. And I do wish we got to have more of Evie's POV about this scene. She goes through an emotional damage including pushing everyone away, & I do wish we got more of that. There was also a scene that they were penpals in high school which was skipped over a bit too quickly - I wish we got more of that.
However I still loved it & I can't wait to get more in this cowboy Texas world with the McCallister family!
