The Assistants by Camille Perri
4.0

Quick and fun read on my Kindle about a group of 20-something women working as assistants at Titan Corp (has there ever been a more on the nose fictional name for a giant faceless corporation?). After a mixup with an expense report causes Tina Fontana to receive a check for $19,000 -- almost the exact amount of her student loan balance -- she uses it. Her boss, Robert (a thinly veiled caricature of Rupert Murdoch), is a billionaire and the missing sum goes unnoticed. Soon, other assistants want to use the same bookkeeping oversight to embezzle the company and pay of their loans.

This is a very light and silly book. It's cathartic to read about their Robin Hood inspired ploy and fun to imagine that such a scheme could actually work. The only part I didn't buy was that B-plot of Tina's romance with another Titan Corp employee. He pursues her like a lost puppy and she is constantly mystified at his interest in her, and even a little annoyed by his avidity to be her boyfriend. So I found it completely unconvincing when at the very end she realizes she has REAL FEELINGS for the guy. Gag.
