In the Land of No Right Angles by Daphne Beal

Mixed feelings on this book.... I enjoyed and could relate to much of it having been in Nepal several years ago but I also was uncomfortable w/ the American characters' desire to "fix" the lives of the people they met in Nepal to make them more suitable to American standards. While we may not "like" the some of the choices of Maya, the main Nepalese character makes in her life, we also need to accept that her choices are made based on her life experiences, not ours. Nepal is a beautiful country and the people there are coming from much different experiences than we could ever hope to totally comprehend. The same is true in India where some off the story is set. This book can show you that it is often difficult to comprehend the lives of people in other cultures and probably is best not to be judgmental and base our impressions on our own experiences and values. The motivation of others is based on their own cultural experiences, not ours....
