The Hobbit is my favourite childhood book and is also the one which holds up the best. I still enjoy reading or listening to it every few years.
I think the only downside is Tolkien's inclusion of so many dwarves. Two or three less would have added much. Having said that, most of the dwarves get more personality in this short book than any did in all three movies.
I highly recommend listening to Tolkien reading some passages from the book. It's fantastic.
