The Winners by Fredrik Backman

3.0

why oh why do the third books in series constantly let me down?

saying this, i still liked it and i'm so glad i went through with it, mainly because of the characters i have grown to love and know so intimately in the first two books, i needed to discover what happened to them. my favourite parts were: the slow, suspenseful buildup in the first few chapters that led up to action packed life events and the explosive last few chapters. and that heartbreaking ending. and of course the place descriptions were beautiful and made me feel like i was there, in beartown.

it was the middle parts that let it down for me, not because they weren't well written and had stuff happen but because i appear to have met my mental limit when it comes to hockey content. in books 1 and 2 there was a good balance of hockey scenes and non hockey scenes and i found the aspect of hockey being the main focus of a small town to be extremely interesting to read about. but in this book i found myself being bored/annoyed by the hockey elements and also the political/media sides of the story were also boring to me.

aannnd there needed to be more benji focused scenes in my opinion.

overall though, this was a great end to the beartown series and i thank mr backman for the wild ride and for the well thought out/complex characters you have created.
