The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee

5.0

This book was an absolute pleasure to read. The characters were well rounded and their personalities jumped off the page. The plot was quick paced and fun. They were always getting into trouble.
I love the fact that the narrator (Monty) is so easily flappable. It’s the main point in his personality that makes him such a love-able character. He’s genuinely emotionally stunted (more so than the average man, even in the 18th century I’d imagine) but that makes his growth all the sweeter. I love that each character he comes across on his tour helps him find himself in some way. They help him peel back the layers he’s fortified around himself until he’s able to be just Monty. He’s one of the best characters I’ve read in a long time.
Not to dismiss the other main characters: Percy and Felicity. Percy’s story being told from Monty’s completely clueless POV is absolute gold. The fact that our narrator is so unreliable about the feelings/emotions of the other characters just makes him more endearing instead of annoying. And that’s from the writing. And Felicity is a dynamic, feminist, powerhouse, and the subject of book 2 so that’s gonna be fun.
Even the characters we pick up along the way are well written and love-able (or hate-able).
Mackenzie Lee is a brilliant author and I can’t wait to read the next 2 books in this series. Highly recommend this book! Couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was gonna happen next. It’s got a little bit of everything, honestly. Politics, intrigue, danger, humor, love... Its above all else, a love story. About learning to love yourself first, so that you can love others better.
