On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King
5.0
This was my “being forced to read this for school finally kicked my butt and got me to read this” book. I gotta be honest. I wouldn’t call myself much of a Stephen King fan. Not that I dislike his books, I just honestly haven’t read enough of them to really know if it’s my speed. But this book was HELLA important for me as a developing writer. This wasn’t a craft book so much as a “here’s a normal human who wanted to write, and here’s how he did it” book. And it was in King’s own words. It was funny and stirring at times, and extremely influential. Knowing that one of the most most prolific authors of our generation (certainly the most prolific horror writer) got his start with fewer resources than me was incredibly motivating. This is in my Top 5 writing books to recommend for the rest of always.
