A Lot Like Adiós by Alexis Daria
5.0
Thank you Alexis for inviting me into your crazy Latinx family (and for sending this overenthusiastic fan a physical copy ❤️)
Where do I begin? I read it in 5 hours, for starters. It’s 2:45am as I start writing this and I am SO SAD the world won’t get to read this book until September. Don’t get me wrong, I adore You Had Me at Hola and Jasmine and Ashton have a very special place in my heart. But Alexis? You really outdid yourself with Michelle and Gabe. The instant sexual tension. The need to ensure that they both kept separate lives. THE FANFICTION????
Let’s take a moment to appreciate the “fan-feek” cause oh my word it’s such an amazing part of this story. I loved that it was included, full episodes and scenes, like Carmen in Charge. I looked forward to seeing what Zack and Riza were up to whenever I could. The love letter to nerd culture is a cherry on top of this gorgeous story.
Gabe and Michelle’s relationship never felt forced. Or “too soon”. Or any of the things that turn me away from romances that take place in a short amount of time. Alexis wrote an incredibly relevant tale of living and loving in 2021 and how home can be whatever or whomever we want it to be. This was a story of growth and healing and learning when to stop running. A Lot Like Adiós made me laugh. And cry. And laugh some more. It gave me all my favorite unrealistic expectations of love while also being so representative of the world I navigate as a Latinx woman in 2021 that it kinda terrified me. Long story short. Run, don’t walk, to preorder this or pick it up in September!
I stumbled upon You Had Me at Hola, and having Boricua rep (written by a Boricua, who was born and raised in the states) was something I never knew I was missing. To have a book that addresses the expectations and experiences that come with being raised in a Latinx household, a Puerto Rican household away from the island. It means the world to me. And Alexis I am forever grateful to you for writing these stories, and including me in the early process of this one ❤️
