On an initial read, without any context or insights into the themes of the story, this book will slap the crap out of you with its technical babble. It careens into an unfathomable depth of space-physics jargon, and it drags you down with it on a rope of unique characters who all encompass unusual personality traits (which include a "sociopathic" protagonist missing half of his brain, a vampire genetically engineered out of the stone age, and an amalgamation of personalities embodied into one person, among others). The aliens are great, the imagery is amazing, and the headspace you'll be left in are all worth this challenging read.
