The Theban Plays
by Sophocles
Fascinating, electric and timeless theatre. Simple plots and sets with powerful characterisation and thematic concerns. Remarkably detailed and poised considering its age. Each work is a self contained beauty, yet they all form to create a powerful trilogy of what seems like a hapless tragedy of a family against the gods and the world. Personal morals and actions are folly in a world where incest, cadavers, spirits and infanticide toy with the predictions of the gods. Sophocles and the translator, Robert Fagles, put together some amazing verse as well, particularly from the chorus. Legitimately dramatic and thrilling the entire way through, an absolute classic for any lover of theatre.
