From bad to worse to worse, and yet Lynch wraps the ever-present tragedy in his smooth prose and the softness of the Donegal countryside in a way that calms the heart sickening fall of Barnabas Kane and his family. Until it swiftly smacks you in the face in a way that you cannot turn away from.
