Night of the Mannequins by Stephen Graham Jones

dark funny tense fast-paced

3.5

Brief Summary: Teen prank involving mannequin goes very, very wrong.

My Thoughts: Wow what a wild ride this was. I'm glad I didn't know anything about this novella before diving into it! I really doubt this was the right place to start with Stephen Graham Jones, but here we are anyways and I had a pretty good time. I thought Sawyer's narration was entertaining and I was very quickly surprised by the direction of the story. It's funny in its absurdity, it's disturbing, and it satisfied the horror story itch I needed scratched. Given the fact that this is only a novella, there really isn't much more I can say without getting into spoilers! It was just a silly good time for me.

Who This Book is For: I might suggest this book to readers who like spooky stories that don't necessarily take themselves too seriously (think: stories told by a campfire but also campy teen slashers?). Readers who enjoy fast-paced, twisty horror with mysterious elements may find something to like in this one. Those who enjoy first person narration - especially when that narrator is unreliable may also get a kick out of Night of the Mannequins!
