The Troop by Nick Cutter
2.0
I wanted to like this book so much. But I didn't and here's why. As it turns out, the books is set in and closely around, Prince Edward Island. I live, right now, on Prince Edward Island. On the day I started this book, I was actually near where the book is ostensibly set. And that's where it all went wrong. I'm all for artistic license, but I'm also for a little research.
There are so many things, geographic, descriptive, animals etc, that are just plain wrong, I kept being jarred right out of the story Ok, being a little pedantic here, but by way of example, Shearwaters, the birds, are in no way related to puffins. Nick has confused the genus "puffinus" with the bird "Puffin" - but if you've ever SEEN the two birds, you know that they are in no way related. I guess that's what happens when you only read the top part of the Wikipedia entry.
Indeed, it's a real shame, because the story itself, is actually pretty engaging. I kept trying to ignore the "wrong" and get back into the story, but I hit a point where I just gave up.
Perhaps, if you, like most people, don't live here, and aren't too concerned about accuracy, you'll be able to settle in and enjoy it. I couldn't.
Hopefully, in his next outing, Nick (Craig) will do a little more research, or his editor will ask for more.
