I have such mixed feelings about this book. There are parts I adore, themes it explores that are interesting and unique and lore that felt new and fresh, but also parts that I disliked, the plot felt a bit choppy, rushed, and the pace was just kinda odd. Ultimately, I enjoyed parts of it much more than the parts that I disliked impacted the story.
I really loved the diversity of the character experiences and I wish we got more background and more development of those relationship. I liked the concept of jumping into a story after war, but I wish it was executed better. I constantly felt I was missing context or information, and it never felt truly resolved/filled-in in a way that wasn’t rushed. The ace and queer representation was amazing to see in the story, and I also loved the different cultural aspects that came up in this fantasy book as well. Ultimately, the book made me feel a lot about the parallels it made to the world’s colonialism, higher powers, romantic love, and sibling love. I am excited to read the next book when it’s released.
