Our Souls at Night
by Kent Haruf
I read this book twice in six months and loved it equally each time through. It is short and sweet, with simple language and few characters. It tells the story of two elderly people who have lost their spouses, live away from their adult children, and form a beautiful relationship with one another. Together, they discuss love, aging, past indiscretions, and what their hopes are for their remaining years. Haruf knew he was dying when he wrote the book, which makes it feel all the more special. I cannot recommend it enough for anyone looking for a thought provoking and moving read.
