laenverse 's review for:
Brutal Prince
by Sophie Lark
i read this book before realising the author is a zionist.
spoilers ahead.
this is mafia romance, my most anticipated book after i got into the genre, and aida and callum as people kinda suck??? born and raised in a mafia family, i expected a brutal prince to be powerful and ruthless, not childish or petty.
callum literally said he wanted her to be clean and groomed for him π how utterly romantic. i love when distain is shown in an enemies-to-lovers relationship, but this was just mean. as a man, he knew he had the most control and he did his best trying to overpower his wife which?? huge turn off. the spa thing was when i wanted to dnf, but i thought it'd get better. in all fairness, i liked when he started to care for her and got jealous and protective, but listen, i kept forgetting callumβs age. in my mind he was at most 21, but this man is 30 years old and he's basically beefing with his teenage wife πππ
he also lives with his parents which is normally fine, but getting grounded by his dad is decidedly not π
i liked that aida came from the rougher side of mafia but at the same time, i didn't think it was a big deal??? are you telling me callum was less about mafia and more political? the brutal prince?? but enemies-to-lovers, romeo and juliet, there was a point to this madness, so let's just brush over that.
but then, thereβs aidaβs brothers. them agreeing to go into enemy territory because their little sister said so and they thought it would have no consequences?? πππ reviews are saying it was like reading a wattpad story. honestly, same. this is bringing me back to 2016.
aida as a character was stressing me out. starting a fire was the craziest solution she could come up with, and everything that happens afterwards made me want to bury her in a trunk and leave her there. why in the world did she take the watch??? why didn't she just give it back ππ like, she's written as a tough girl so naturally that means she and her brother can take down two very older and stronger men π€¨ girl caused a war for the stupidest of reasons, and her brother paid the biggest price. she's naive and spoiled as teenagers can be but for some reason no one knowledges it. her mess literally ruined her brother's life and i expected the guy to be angry at her, but β¨οΈ plot shield β¨οΈ
the romance could not be sold to me at this point. the sex scenes were okay, but callum's thoughts kind of ruined that as well tbh.
1 star, boarding 1.5 because i did like callum for a hot second, but that might've been my delusional mind, but also aida shot a gun on the bodyguard which was awesome.
