The Emperor

Amara and Dante have such a beautiful story - the character arcs are stellar. Although be prepared, there are tough, tough scenes in The Emperor. Amara has probably one of the most devastating arc I've read to this day. Honestly, if you picked up the first book in the Dark Verse series for the romance, you win because you also get a cool plot with characters weaving in and out, and breadcrumbs that will leave you guessing at every turn. The way Dante takes over his father (after the brutal ending of book 2) is perfect.
The Emperor takes us back years before the time of current events in books 1 and 2. We follow Amara and Dante (the dual POV is a welcome addition here) from the moment they first connect in their childhood, and bear witness to everything that brings them together (and more often than not, pulls them apart).
Now, something bigger than the romantic plotline is at stake, and I was on the edge of my seat (despite knowing how this ends, being on a re-read), devouring page after page, excited to see mysterious characters come back, adding to the plot and general tension.
