Attack on Titan, Volume 16 by Hajime Isayama

5.0

*SPOILERS*

So: i feel like we got lots of answers and everything seems clearer although i’m sure these truths probably are nothing and more is to come.

first of all i’m really glad to finally know what happened with the reiss family and historia’s role. i think on of the question that remains is « why did the predecessors not save humanity since they had the power of the titans » ? it still doesn’t make any sense and this whole god thing is creepy and disturbing, like there’s more to it. i’m so glad historia stood up to her selfish asshole father and decided to not eat eren and save her friend. i think her character has evolved at this moment and i’m starting to really like her personality.

as for eren, the kid is traumatized and couldn’t have been more confused. so his dad stole the power and killed an entire family for it, then he passed it on to his son while making him eat him.. that is beyond fucked up. eren is gonna be scarred for life and i understand his utter confusion, sadness, despair. i hope he’ll figure something out. if humanity can truly only be saved with this power, used by a reiss then it means he will have to die eventually ? since he’s the main character i doubt it so we’ll see...
also why did his dad stole the power ? was he working for someone ? what was his plan ? bc he probably knew it was powerful and needed a reiss so why take it for himself ? unless he knew a reiss elsewhere...

As far as kenny’s character is concerned, he’s a piece of shit but he seemed to have gained some reason after he was fooled. maybe he can become an ally, he’s the worst type of human being but he could be useful. (i feel like he looks like the beast titan it’s strange...)
we also got some explanations for the ackerman/asian bloodlines and that was interesting. mikasa and levi probably are related in some way. that still doesn’t explain their extraordinary skills but they mentioned it so hopefully we’ll know soon. this whole « can’t be subjected to the erasure of memories » thing was intriguing as well.

so to sum up this was an amazing volume. i loooove that we got answers i hate being kept in the dark while more questions arise every chapter so this was good.
i think what i’m still wondering is:
- where did the titans originate from ? who did it and why ?
- what are the other truths about the reiss family ? why didn’t they save humanity ? can they even do it, since it seems when you get the power you suddenly are burdened by the memories and ideology of genocide driven ancestors...
- who is that person bertolt and reiner were trying to reach? someone who also wants eren’s power and for what ? is it a reiss clan member who’d like to annihilate humanity ? also what’s that « home » they’re trying to reach ? is there a titan/human city out there ?(that’s the best i can do in terms of theory lol)
- is it the beast giant ? who is he and what’s his story ?

so yeah i wanted to write everything down to organize my thoughts and prepare for the next volumes. i’m really excited and i’m loving this manga. the details, complexities, and surprises are so well written and conveyed, it’s really rare to find such a rich story these days.
my favorite character so far is levi, he’s fearless and wise, just like erwin. i think they’re both admirable although this whole selfish side of erwin did disgust me a bit. but he’s human after all i guess...
