appreciate the perspective of the author as someone who didn't grow up in an ethnic community that included other people like her (such as NYC). instead, she has to navigate an unsteady childhood and  being Puerto Rican in parts of Ohio that didn't have other people like her outside of her older sisters and mom and what it means for her later on to claim Puerto Rico as her own.
