As usual, I could have done without the romance, but otherwise what a pleasant surprise! I’ve been super hesitant to pick up Dragonlance books outside of the ‘main’ canon bc I remember the quality being. variable. But I needed something more from the plot of Summer Flame and this hit just the right spot! I found the writing to be very engaging, and the shorter plot + focus on a few characters rather than the usual ensemble cast made for a very nice change of pace.

Like with Summer Flame, I'm a big fan of the world-ends-in-fire atmosphere, and I loved the exploration of faith in the face of annihilation, and how to keep that faith even when you’re no longer getting anything from it.

Character-wise, Crysania is absolutely wonderful here, which is so nice to see esp after Legends where she starts off strong but then kinda just. Doesn’t get to do anything for an entire book and a half. Also! Disabled protagonist!! Who doesn’t fall into Inspirationally Disabled tropes!!! Yes please.

(Dalamar meanwhile plays the part of the fairytale witch, casting dubiously canon animal transformation curses that can only be broken by the power of True Love, and I think that’s a very good look for him.)

All in all a pretty solid entry in the series, and one I wouldn't hesitate to recommend as a companion read to Summer Flame.
