I went into this second book in a planned trilogy BLIND based just on tropes. It was a roller coaster of emotions! The characters are well developed and the side characters just add to the world making me want more books (still need to go back and read the first book in the series Ace of Betrayal). I recommend this book if you like top notch banter, reluctant allies, enemies to lovers, opposites attract, tatted alpha hero, touch her and die, characters you love to hate, a struggle to a HEA, and trigger warnings. I love how @JessicaJudeBooks writes her characters as real people with real lives and real flaws.
If you want more specific details (no spoilers)…
I will admit that I did not like the FMC Lux at first, actually there were a couple of times during the book I wanted to scream at her! Her background explains a lot about her but still, arg!! I’ve seen Lux described as the “It Girl”- think Gossip Girl, socialite. I am not a fan of this type of character and probably would have DNFd if it weren’t for the other characters and the story line. Again, I love how Jessica Jude writes her characters as real people with real lives and real flaws and I really started to care about Lux. I also don’t love her friend group but again, I really started to care for all of them by the end (mentally giving Rhett a hug and hoping he gets his own book!).
The MMC Slate is also no saint, but I pretty much loved him from the beginning. It might be wrong but apparently, I’m ok with characters doing bad things for the right reasons. Plus the character art by @rumaisa.artstudio is chef’s kiss- he’s hot. Slate is from the Junction (think other side of the tracks). He’s a protective big brother that knows everyone in his community. He’s trying to do better but still working to survive with the cards he’s been dealt.
Thank you, Jessica Jude, for providing me with an advance copy of this book!
