The Winter of Our Discontent by John Steinbeck
2.0

“now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York.”

it’s honestly quite poetic that i’m ending the year with this book. the themes persistent in this book could not be more perfect to sum up the shit show this year was, and to be quite honest, this book felt like a shit show as well.

i did appreciate the home truths about the world then and not surprisingly, now, and how it emphasizes how we’ve messed it up even more. my biggest problem with the book was how it set out to do so much and had you hoping it really would do that much but instead did very little with its big themes. i expected a big bang overall and got a dull spark and then an eventual disappointing fizzle.

this book promises to make you “feel” from beginning to end but all it did was increase my apathy and it just could not end quickly enough. the fact that it took me an entire month to finish this 299-page book is testament enough. my last read of 2024 ending with a fizzle is so on brand for this year.

here’s to 2025 bringing hope and great change good for us all and above all, the promised “glorious summer” to this daughter of York.
