Nocturnal Blood
by Villimey Mist
Maybe I'm not the target audience for this book because I really didn't gel with it. I'll read and watch almost anything about vampires, as I love to see which bits of the mythology they've used or tweaked. One of my main issues with the book was with Sophie - she is a horrible person! She's angry, snappy, and a pretty shitty friend to Leia, and I never understood why Leia put up with it. The problem is, the whole plot hinges on this female friendship and I just couldn't get passed it. The constant referencing to Leia being named after Princess Leia was a bit tiring, too.
I liked the concept, and the vampires in this are on the animalistic side, which I always enjoy. There was a good mix of old money vamp vibes with becoming a monster when hungry for blood. The addition of Ghouls was interesting, too, and added another layer to the vampire lore of this book. The road trip element was right up my street too - especially the diners and the weird little motels of back road USA.
Saying that, I just could not become invested in the central relationship, and the book suffered for it.
