Unbreakable by Elizabeth Norris
4.0

*** WARNING!! CONTAINS UNAVOIDABLE SPOILERS FOR UNRAVELLING (book 1)***

Unbreakable picks up the story of Janelle Tenner a few months after she stopped otherworldly teenager Reid from destroying the world. She may have saved our universe, but the earthquakes and floods have left most of America in pieces. Janelle is trying to help fix the devastation whilst dealing with the heartbreak of the death of best friend Alex and loss of boyfriend Ben, who has gone back to his home universe. And it seems to be working, until people start disappearing, and Interverse Agent Taylor Barclay shows up, needing her help. People are not just disappearing from her universe but from others as well. And Ben, with his unique portal making abilities, is prime suspect. Now Janelle has five days to catch the culprit and prove that Ben is innocent... But is he?

I read Unbreakable about two years after Unravelling,so was a bit hazy with some of the characters to start with, but with a little refreshing all was good. I wasn't she what to expect from this sequel, but was pleasantly surprised . The plot of this book is ingenious: a multiverse human trafficking ring? That's a terrifying concept!! The good guys are awesome but not so clean-cut, and the bad guys are really bad; what more can you ask for in a good summer read?

Janelle is one of those characters that is so relatable, despite her unusual situation, and I never found myself getting too annoyed at her actions (though the occasional eye roll was needed in places). She is staying strong despite all that has happened, but thankfully the tragic events of the previous book are not quickly forgotten and glossed over. I don't necessarily agree with all of her choices, but Norris has done well to continue to develop her as a character.

One character that I was particularly impressed with in this sequel was Taylor Barclay. We didn't get to know much about him in Unravelling, but Unbreakable shows another, more well rounded persona that fleshes him out indefinitely. I cannot express how much I loved Barclay in this book, he's just incredible! He and Janelle make a formidable team, and I've got to admit I kind of didn't want Ben to come back into the picture...

Speaking of whom, Ben... I'm sorry but I just didn't like him in this instalment. When we eventually catch up with him, he has made a major mistake, and unlike Janelle, I think that it isn't understandable in the slightest. Yes, he's still the same cheesy, adorable Ben we fell In love with in Unravelling, but after spending so much time with Barclay, there isn't a comparison. The best way to describe it is that actions speak louder than words: Ben says all the right things, but at the end of the day, Barclay DOES the right things.

And of course Unbreakable sees the return of Elijah and Cecily, who finally meet! What is their ship name by the way? Elicily? I don't know, but I ship them anyway, and am hoping to see more of them in the next book!

The plot is very well executed, delivered well with a fast pace and a few plot turns that I did NOT see coming. That ending, anyone?? Elizabeth Norris is a very evil person!!

Overall, one of those rare sequels that could *even* top the first book, Unbreakable is a slick story chock full of action and surprises.
High hopes of there being a book 3!
