Across the Green Grass Fields by Seanan McGuire

3.5

I love this series and the intersecting stories of now and the worlds in this case of centaurs and unicorns and kelpie. The first part follows Regan as she grows up and deals with the arbitrary and exclusive rules of girlhood and finds out that she is intersex.

After she is harassed for her identity, she runs from the school into a pasture and through a door where she finds family and her own self. I loved this middle part, the worldbuilding, the characters, I don't know if because the beginning was longer and this is still a novella, but the end was too abrupt for me, I wanted to spend more time n the grasslands and the end didn't allow enough closure for me (though I did like the end reveal, I just wanted more afterwards)
