The Core by Peter V. Brett

The series started strong, but each next book felt worse than one before it. I think that may be because the first book was more supernatural horror: demons against humans. But as the story continued, people got more powerful and the focus shifted more to the humans as demons weren't so scary anymore. Mind demons and princes tried to add scariness, but as princes were highly intelligent, then the original demonic animals feel was missing.
But overall I still enjoyed Arlen Bales journey. Even if I felt at the ending fight that I wasn't really enjoying it that much. Same went also to other people fights at the same time, because knowing how much of the book was left, it didn't really seem to matter how those fights went.
None-the-less the books concept of demons rising from the ground at the nightfall will always stay close to my heart.
