The Narrow Road Between Desires by Patrick Rothfuss

3.0

3 stars. The Narrow Road Between Desires is the reimagining of the short story “The Lightning Tree” by Patrick Rothfuss set in the Kingkiller Chronicles Universe.

Not recommended if you have not read the Kingkiller Chronicles, the story centers around Bast, Kvothe’s Inn companion/servant/employee and delves a bit deeper into his nature as a character. It is always great to jump into the world of Kvothe, but it didn’t satisfy the itch for the third unreleased main novel.

I read The Lightning Tree and liked the expanded version found here and the illustrations within, but just like the previous version, it didn’t give me feelings one way or the other for Bast. In fact, it left me with more questions than answers. Bast’s propensity to make bargains with youth and to dwell on the more “adult” feelings he has with other adult characters in the book we’re difficult to get through at times. My favorite parts were the ones back at the Inn with “Reshi” but they were few and far between. If you want to dive deeper into the world of Kvothe, check out the very interesting The Slow Regard of Silent Things.
