Things Magical Under the Moon: A Grim Anthology by Amanda Stockton, Alexis L. Carroll

4.0

Six stories of terror, mystery, and warnings of the things that prowl under the watchful gaze of the moon. Alexis L. Carroll and Amanda Stockton bring 6 retelling mashups in this short anthology.

For this review, I will highlight one story from each author.

The Untamed Daughter was a fantastic choice for the opening story of this anthology. Amanda writes with a flair for the dramatic. With poetic prose, the story washes over you in a way that soothes the wounds of the subject matter.
I cried myself empty until the day gave way to the coldness of the night. I wrapped my arms around myself and thought of that moon. Its shine and fullness filled my dreams. Its phasing parts exploded into a murder of crows, down to its last crescent. And then it, too, fell away to black-feathered darkness.

The wonder in discovering new places is evident in “In the Trees,” a science fiction dream with elements of dark fantasy. I was not as moved by the second story in this anthology, but the stark differences between the two authors play well. With anger-filled undertones of the consequences of trying to colonize seemingly uninhabited land, Carroll has built an entire world in a short story.

This grim anthology is a beautiful work of art and rage… so much female rage! Great for those who enjoy retellings and horror elements.
