Open Water by Caleb Azumah Nelson

5.0

There are few words to describe a book like this. Open Water is a poetic, astounding novel that asks many questions and gets few answers. What does freedom look like? How does trauma define us? What did we do to deserve the things that happen to us? What is love?

Open Water is an exploration of what it means to be black, the perceptions we have of black people, and police brutality that plagues black people everywhere. It’s setting in London was eye opening for me as an American because I don’t usually look farther than my own city to see injustice. I often idolize other countries (mainly England) yet injustice is everywhere. This book was blunt and brutal about this and I needed to read it.

Caleb Azumah Nelson is a master of the written word. He has crafted something so unique in style and so truthful in story. The use of 2nd person is powerful and the weight of his words will not leave me anytime soon.
