North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell
4.0

Really excellent character study, though the pacing of the ending is affected by the serialization of the original publication. The last few chapters are very rushed. The book is superior to the BBC series in every way except for the ending, which is better paced (although some of the show is choppy). Gaskell asks questions and engages in social commentary that is absolutely still relevant. The best love story is between Master Thornton and the Union Leader Higgins—!
