Personally I read for escapism and enjoyment and therefore most of the books I read tend to be more lighthearted, but I give myself a few more intense reads throughout the year here and there. I'm glad I chose this as one of my more serious reads. The beginning is a bit slow as it sets up Wallace's role within his university but quickly thereafter delves into the real lives (and traumas) of the characters. This book is heart wrenching and reflective in a way that left me somehow both empty and full after reading. The writing is superb and I would definitely recommend it to a friend (with a pointed recommendation to check the trigger warnings first).
