I do not want to give a rating for this as I am not the market, which is middle grade students. 

I would have loved this in 4th-6th grade. It is a story with clear themes and would bring a lot of students joy, confidence, and hope. The author reflects on her own experience in middle school of being an Asian-American facing racism, searching for her identity, and trying out for the cheerleading squad with her best friend. 

I would recommend this to any students of this age bracket, as it provided a great message.
