The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison

5.0

a truly incredible debut. morrison never fails to craft the most harrowing stories - my jaw was on the floor by page 5.

the use of the dick and jane story to frame the struggles of pecola and her family was genius. i also loved claudia as a narrator. pecola’s story and the things that happen to her throughout the book are an absolutely haunting exploration of race, class, and gender. this novel shows the limits of what a person can take and how family history has repercussions that are felt throughout multiple lifetimes. the writing itself is beautiful and evocative. the world morrison creates in this book is simultaneously self-contained, yet imbued with far-reaching history and tension.

i don’t think i can ever do morrison’s books justice in a review - the books speak for themselves. she is a must-read author.
